Organic debris — photograph from The Booze Cruise

photo: a line of reeds line the top of the image, and below that is canal water full of yellow-green plant material that sits on the surface of the water like wet duvets; a barge pole with a hook is in the centre of the image, a big clump of wet, long, stringy, green-black weed hanging off the end.

Location: Birmingham Canal Navigations between Wolverhampton and Birmingham, West Midlands.

Date: Thursday 2nd July 1998.

Equipment: Canon EOS 50e using 28mm f/2.8 lens.

Emulsion: Fujifilm Superia 400.

Keywords: canal, flotsam, plant matter, weeds, overgrown, barge pole.

Notes: it was this green-black junk that was winding itself around the propeller and tangling the rudder, causing a massive loss of power and manoeuvrability.
